Up Close and Personal with Peter Liechty, MD, FAANS, FACS

Surgery as his calling:I enjoyed using my hands. I enjoyed the immediate impact you could have on disease with surgical intervention. I was also blessed with really strong mentors.”

Why he chose neurosurgery: “It’s a wonderful combination of rebuilding but also a delicate precision that requires a very wide skillset. It’s a fascinating approach that gives you the ability to really impact people’s lives for the better.”

Why he chose Louisiana: “I was an outsider from Chicago Med at UAB but all the LSU students were outsiders as well. Naturally we befriended each other. I had friends who brought me to LSU football games. I really enjoyed the culture in New Orleans, the wide diversity of everything, the old trees juxtaposed with the city… it was easy to fall for the place.”

Feeling right at home: “Believe it or not, I rode on four Mardi Gras floats before ever seeing a parade from the street.” Dr. Liechty was named King of Chronos after just six years in the Krewe.
